Mayan Mythology had many elements in common with those of other ancient civilizations in the Americas. These mythical stories explained the origin of natural and cultural phenomena that significanlty aftected the ancient Mayan civilizations.

Mayan mythology was deeply intertwined with astronomy. The Mayans were keen astronomers, and their myths often reflected celestial events and cycles. There was also an obvious integration of real historical events into the ancient mayan myths and stories.
